New Dismissal Protections from October 2027

The UK government has confirmed stricter dismissal protections for pregnant women and new parents, taking effect in October 2027. This gives a 12-month window to review workforce planning, protect talent, and mitigate the risk of costly employment tribunal claims.
For sectors like the UK Event Industry, which are built on fast-paced delivery, late nights, and high-pressure operational roles, event businesses must adapt early. Under the new regulations, the legal bar for termination is significantly higher from day one of employment, including during probation periods. Tribunals will replace the traditional "reasonable response" test with a strict proportionality test. Consequently, following standard performance processes or proving misconduct will no longer suffice; businesses must legally prove that dismissal was the absolute last resort to achieve a legitimate business aim.
These protections cover pregnancy, maternity, adoption, shared parental, and neonatal care leave. To prepare, event leaders should focus on three immediate priorities:
1. Train Managers and Supervisors: Legal protection triggers upon verbal notification. Managers must be trained to handle and document these disclosures immediately without waiting for formal HR paperwork.
2. Review Tracking Systems: Protection extends from initial disclosure until 6 months after leave ends. HR and resource management systems must track these periods accurately to maintain compliance.
3. Manage Performance Early: Address performance or conduct issues promptly, fairly, and supportively from the outset, rather than delaying until key delivery windows.
